Dungeon Settlers Combat Tips: Pause, Auto Skills, Stuns

Pause is the main tool

Combat is real time, but you can pause at any moment. The 10 Advanced Tips video pauses every time:

  • an enemy starts channelling a dangerous skill;
  • a settler’s health gets low;
  • a new debuff or status effect appears;
  • the party needs to reposition out of an area attack or reshuffle the front line.

Energy and auto skills

  • Every skill costs energy, and energy also drains through the day. Settlers can pass out mid-fight.
  • Auto skills cast automatically; CanOpener added an in-game Auto Skills guide in v0.4.19. On higher difficulties players keep auto on only for cheap skills and cast the big ones by hand, because automatic casting wastes energy.
  • The F key toggles skill use for a unit. Turn skills off while clearing easy early floors to arrive at the deep floors with full energy.
  • Skill order matters for auto casting: nature players put Germinate before Clinging Vines on the hotbar so seeds actually sprout.

Hitting and getting hit

  • Base hit rate is 100%; dodge lowers it, and hit chance above or below 100% changes the odds (players’ explanation).
  • Health is split into torso and head. When head health hits zero a settler is downed and the bar becomes a death meter; any more damage kills them. Enemies usually prefer living targets.
  • Stuns interrupt casts, so save them for the enemy that summons or channels.
  • Focus fire on one target at a time; spreading damage is slower.

Party habits that save lives

  • Carry a torch. It adds +3 vision and +15% hit chance, and Torch’s Light gives nearby allies a small bonus.
  • Control looting. Toggle “Auto Pickup in Dungeon” from the pick-up mode button if settlers run past enemies for loot.
  • Use the terrain. You can build barricades and campfires on a floor.
  • Watch for respawns. Staying on a floor more than a day brings monsters back stronger.
  • Retreat is allowed. Find the portal early so you have an exit.

Builds that make these tactics easier are on the party builds page, and the first aid guide covers what to do when someone goes down.
