How to Get Clay in Dungeon Settlers (Early and Late)
Why clay feels so rare
Clay is the first resource most players run out of. One tips video calls it “rarer than gold”, and a Chinese-language Steam thread complains that grinding it stalls the whole early game, because without clay you cannot lay farm plots, make the pots the cooking station needs, or craft the Goddess’s Tears that clear corrupted land around your base.
Where to get clay
| Source | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Acid Slogel | Veil of Silence, Floor 3 onward | The main early source. Prima Games reports about 2 clay per kill |
| Predatory Frog | Dungeon floors (reported with the Slogels) | Prima Games reports about 5 per kill |
| Festering Burrow | Region 2, after the Giant Stone Golem | Players find much more wood and clay here |
| Merchants | Guild and dungeon traders | Buy in bulk once gold stops being tight |
The per-kill numbers are reported by one outlet and repeated by others, not published by CanOpener, so treat them as typical rather than guaranteed. In the demo, CanOpener let Rank 2 Guild Traders sell large amounts of clay because Region 2 was not available; that was marked demo-only.
How to farm it without wasting runs
- Plan routes, not random hunts. Head for Floor 3 once your party can handle it and clear Slogel rooms first.
- Watch your armour. Slogels spit acid that corrodes durability. Archers can snipe them from range.
- Rotate floors. Clearing the same floor over and over drains its depletion gauge and cuts drops. See depletion and Dungeon Stay.
- Switch to buying. The 10 Advanced Tips video makes the point bluntly: once gold is stable, expedition time is worth more than the gold, so buy clay and spend runs on things you cannot buy.
- Move on to Region 2. When Region 1 yields less and less, the Festering Burrow is the better clay farm.
What to spend your first clay on
Players spend the first batches on the things that fix other shortages:
- Farm plots, so you stop diving just to feed everyone (see food and farming).
- Clay pots and the cooking station, which unlocks better meals and longer mood bonuses.
- Goddess’s Tears, when you are ready to expand the settlement.
Patch v0.4.19 made clay lighter to carry, so a single run now brings more home. For every other material, see the resource finder.
